{"id":5226,"date":"2021-01-25T20:49:29","date_gmt":"2021-01-25T20:49:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cnl.wpengine.com\/?page_id=5226"},"modified":"2021-01-26T16:45:17","modified_gmt":"2021-01-26T16:45:17","slug":"supporting-federal-priorities","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.cnl.ca\/about-cnl\/supporting-federal-priorities\/","title":{"rendered":"Supporting Federal Priorities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;grid&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221; z_index=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text]<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aecl.ca\/science-technology\/federal-science-and-technology-work-plan\/\">Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL)<\/a> is responsible for the management and oversight of the Federal Nuclear Science and Technology Work Plan and engages with the various federal departments and agencies to develop a program of work that meets their needs and priorities and to oversee the delivery of the work to bring value for money for Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The program of work in the Federal Nuclear Science and Technology Work Plan is governed by an Interdepartmental Steering Committee, an Interdepartmental Integration Committee, and five Research Theme Sub-Committees (Sub-committees) with AECL as the program administrator and oversight organization.<\/p>\n<p>Delivery of much of the FNST Work Plan leverages the vast experience and expertise at the Chalk River Laboratories \u2013 Canada\u2019s largest science and technology complex \u2013 to contribute to the government\u2019s health, science, innovation and climate change objectives.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;64px&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;grid&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221; z_index=&#8221;&#8221; background_image=&#8221;5228&#8243;][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text el_class=&#8221;blue-text max-container-920&#8243; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1611679492846{padding-bottom: 42px !important;}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Research themes and activities:<\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;]<div class='q_list circle'><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Supporting the development of biological applications and understanding the implications of radiation on living things.<\/li>\n<li>Supporting environmental stewardship and radioactive waste management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;]<div class='q_list circle'><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enhancing national and global security, nuclear preparedness and emergency response.<\/li>\n<li>Supporting safe, secure and responsible use and development of nuclear technologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Examples:<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<strong>Research to support the potential development of small modular reactors in Canada.<\/strong><br \/>\nSmall modular reactors are meant to be smaller, simpler and safer. They could potentially provide low-carbon energy to the mining and gas industry and remote communities, or be used in existing electrified areas to help meet increased electricity demand (due in part to the rise of electric vehicles).
